To the Members of Congress
We call upon you as a member of Congress to exercise your constitutional duty as the custodian of our constitutionally protected liberties to stand against judicial tyranny and activism, to right the wrongs of the judicial branch which has invaded the sovereign domain of Religious Freedom to render the First Amendment protections a nullity.
Today we have a constitutional crisis in Indianapolis as U.S. Marshals gather to seize the property of Indianapolis Baptist Temple to pay fraudulently assessed taxes via an order of the U.S. District Court by a biased judge.
The order taxing a church is unprecedented and is a "per se" violation of the First Amendment guarantee of religious liberty.
The power to tax a church is the power to regulate the church - the power to regulate or control a church is the power to destroy a church. It is also the power to establish a church which is a blatant violation of the First Amendment.
The court order by Judge Sarah Evans Barker is manifest of the fear of judicial tyranny decried by Thomas Jefferson in 1789.
The Clinton Administration can stop this injustice in furtherance of the public policy of debt forgiveness.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the Clinton Administration has forgiven millions of dollars of corporate tax debt, and President Clinton recently announced that his administration has forgiven billions of dollars of foreign debt. They can certainly forgive unconstitutional taxes erroneously assessed to a church.
We beseech you, "speak out for religious liberties" and stop this assault on the Lord's Churches in this nation today!!
